AI Briefing: Sonnet 5.5 and a wider coding model choice
Anthropic’s new Sonnet release, its Copilot rollout and the separate availability of GPT-6 Sol and Luna.

Anthropic releases Claude Sonnet 5.5
Anthropic positions Sonnet 5.5 as a faster, more efficient successor to Sonnet 5. It keeps the same input and output token prices, while reporting lower per-task costs from its own tests. The announcement distinguishes benchmark results from complex, open-ended work, where Anthropic still considers Opus 5.5 stronger. These performance and efficiency claims come from the model provider.
Why it matters
Measure task completion, latency and total tokens on your own workload. An unchanged token price can produce a different bill when the model uses a different number of tokens.

Sonnet 5.5 rolls out inside GitHub Copilot
GitHub announced Sonnet 5.5 for Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise users. It lists editor, app, command-line and mobile surfaces, while warning that rollout is gradual. Managed-account access follows model policies. GitHub’s observations about fewer steps and faster completion are early internal testing, not a universal performance guarantee.
Why it matters
A provider launch and availability in a particular coding tool are separate events. Check your plan, model selector and organization policy before moving a workflow.

Copilot adds separate GPT-6 Sol and Luna options
GitHub’s September 22 announcement adds GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna alongside Astra. It describes Sol as a balanced coding option and Luna as a lighter option for smaller tasks. Their supported Copilot plans differ, and rollout is gradual. Usage-based billing and managed model policies still apply; the family name alone does not describe a user’s available configuration.
Why it matters
Choose using the complexity of the task and the actual plan costs. A lightweight model and a larger model can be useful at different stages of the same project.
